The Great Backyard Bird Count: February 12-15

Yes, Yes, Yes! The 13th Great Backyard Bird Count is almost here! You know, there are few things in life a cat enjoys more than watching birds and once a year we can do what we do best AND take part in a national scientific project. We're Doctors of Birdology!

The BGGC happens once a year, when tens of thousands of bird watchers of all ages create a snapshot of where the birds are across the U.S. & Canada. It's a four day event - this year from February 12 - 15, 2010.
Acorn Woodpecker, AZ

All you have to do to participate is spend at least 15 minutes on one or more of the four days counting birds anywhere you like, then report your results to www.birdcount.org by March 1, 2010. You can count birds from your window, balcony or backyard, from a park, a lake, a river or the ocean, from a bus stop or an office or anywhere at all.

Once you've submitted your bird sightings checklist, you can download a certificate in recognition of your great work counting birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count! (Suitable for framing!)   =^..^=

In 2009, counters reported 11,550,200 individual birds of 619 species! See last year's results from your state or province here.

White-Throated Sparrow, NC

There's also a photo contest. You can photograph the birds you see during the GBBC and send them in to be shared and judged in a variety of categories. Click here to see the other 2009 winning photographs. Prizes are here.
